Choosing the Perfect Photoshoot Location
One of the biggest questions I get asked when planning a session is: “Where should we have our photos taken?” The answer? It depends on the vibe you're going for! Whether you’re after a dreamy water backdrop, wide open fields, breathtaking mountain views, or something totally unique, Canberra has some stunning locations to choose from. Let’s explore the options!
Water Backdrops
Tranquil & Timeless
There’s something about water that brings a sense of calm and beauty to photos. Whether it’s the soft reflections of the sunset or the gentle ripples adding texture, water backdrops always make for a stunning setting. A few of my favourite spots include:
Pine Island – This is my favorite location for maternity shoots as it offers a lovely mix of water, trees, and open spaces, perfect for a variety of backdrops in one location.
Uriarra Crossing – A beautiful mix of river views and surrounding bushland, great for a natural and peaceful feel.
Yarralumla Bay – Gorgeous grassy fields leading down to the water’s edge, perfect for those dreamy golden-hour shots.

If you love wide, open landscapes with gorgeous golden light, open spaces are a fantastic choice. These locations provide a sense of freedom and simplicity, letting you and your family shine.
Queanbeyan Nature Reserve - Easy access with open fields, and plenty of space for little ones to run and play!
Jerrabomberra Wetlands - Jerrabomberra Wetlands offers a stunning backdrop of expansive landscapes and grassy fields. It's the perfect location for a more open, airy feel, especially if you’re looking for plenty of room to capture movement and natural light.
Mountain Views
Dramatic & Breathtaking
Want an epic, scenic backdrop? Mountain views add a sense of adventure and grandeur to your photos. The best part? These locations change beautifully with the seasons, offering different looks throughout the year.
Tidbinbilla – If you’re up for a little adventure, this location provides an incredible mix of mountains, native wildlife, and untouched landscapes. This is more suited to solo/couple sessions.
Cooleman Ridge Nature Track - For those who don’t mind a short walk with a few stairs, this location glows beautifully during sunset. It also features a driving track, perfect for exploring and capturing some unique, off-the-beaten-path shots.
Gardens & Trees
Lush & Dreamy
If you love the idea of being surrounded by towering trees, gorgeous flowers, and dappled sunlight, gardens and wooded areas make for a stunning backdrop.
The National Arboretum – With stunning forests, winding pathways, and a mix of native and exotic trees, this is a breathtaking option.
Australian National Botanic Gardens – A lush, green paradise full of native flora, shaded pathways, and seasonal flowers.
Telopea Park – A beautiful tree-lined park, especially stunning in autumn with golden leaves creating a magical atmosphere.
Weston Park, Yarralumla - In spring, the blossoms are in full bloom, creating a vibrant and fresh atmosphere and in autumn, the falling leaves add a warm, golden touch, making it a perfect spot for a relaxed, nature-filled photoshoot throughout the seasons.
Pialligo Redwood Forest - A beautiful location for morning or midday sessions, with plenty of shade from its towering redwoods. The open spaces provide room for little ones to play, and its easy access from the carpark makes it a hassle-free spot for families.
Indoor Sessions
Cozy & Intimate
Not a fan of the outdoors or prefer a more controlled environment? Indoor sessions can be just as beautiful and offer a warm, intimate feel.
Your Home – Perfect for lifestyle sessions, capturing natural moments in a space that feels comfortable and personal. Great for newborns, families, or couples wanting a relaxed vibe.
Studio Sessions – A fantastic option for a clean, minimal look. Studios offer great lighting and weatherproof conditions, and if you’d like a studio session, I can arrange one for you (studio hire fees may apply).
Autumn Leaves
Seasonal Colours
If you love warm tones, rich colours, and that magical golden crunch underfoot—an autumn session might be perfect for you. Canberra truly puts on a show in autumn, and it’s one of the most popular times of year for family, maternity, and couple sessions.

Weston Park – Stunning tree-lined paths, pops of colour, and a calm lakeside backdrop
National Arboretum – Sweeping views and soft light through changing trees
