One of the first things people ask me after booking a session is: “Where should we do our photos?”  And honestly, I love this question—because Canberra is packed with gorgeous places to explore, from golden fields and mountain views to cozy forests and sparkling water backdrops. Whether you’re planning a family photoshoot, maternity session, newborn shoot, or a couples session, there’s a location to suit every vibe.

So, here are some of my favourite Canberra photoshoot locations to help you find the perfect spot for your story.

By the Water: Relaxed & Timeless Vibes

There’s something about water that brings a sense of calm and beauty to photos. Whether it’s the soft reflections of the sunset or the gentle ripples adding texture, water backdrops always make for a stunning setting. A few of my favourite spots include:

Pine Island – This is my favourite location for maternity shoots as it offers a lovely mix of water, trees, and open spaces, perfect for a variety of backdrops in one location.

Uriarra Crossing – A beautiful mix of river views and surrounding bushland, great for a natural and peaceful feel.

Kambah Pool – A peaceful riverside spot with rocky edges and bushland surrounds. It’s best earlier in the day as it doesn’t catch sunset light, and it also has a quieter section (yep, the nudist beach) which makes it great for more intimate maternity sessions where privacy is important.

Open Spaces

If you love wide, open landscapes with gorgeous golden light, open spaces are a fantastic choice. These locations provide a sense of freedom and simplicity, letting you and your family shine.

Queanbeyan Nature Reserve -  Easy access with open fields, and plenty of space for little ones to run and play!

Jerrabomberra Wetlands -  Jerrabomberra Wetlands offers a stunning backdrop of expansive landscapes and grassy fields. It's the perfect location for a more open, airy feel, especially if you’re looking for plenty of room to capture movement and natural light.

Mountain Views

Want an epic, scenic backdrop? Mountain views add a sense of adventure and grandeur to your photos. The best part? These locations change beautifully with the seasons, offering different looks throughout the year.

Tidbinbilla – If you’re up for a little adventure, this location provides an incredible mix of mountains, native wildlife, and untouched landscapes. This is more suited to solo/couple sessions.

Cooleman Ridge - This one is perfect at sunset, glowing with golden light over the hills. It does require a short walk and a few stairs, so it’s best for families who are mobile and happy to explore a little. There’s also a driving track for some fun, off-the-beaten-path photo opportunities.

Indoor Sessions

Not everyone loves the outdoors, and honestly, you don’t have to. Some of the most beautiful, meaningful photos happen inside—where you’re relaxed, warm, and in your element.

In-Home Sessions - Your home is where your story unfolds every day, so why not capture it there? In-home sessions are perfect for lifestyle photography—whether it’s snuggles on the couch, playing in the nursery, or baking together in the kitchen. They’re especially lovely for newborn sessions or families who want a cosy, natural feel without having to leave the house.

Studio Sessions - If you’re after a clean, simple vibe (and  good light), a studio session could be perfect. Studios give us beautiful, consistent lighting and a calm space to focus on connection. They’re also completely weatherproof—no need to worry about rain or wind! If you’re keen on a studio session, let me know and I’ll organise one for you. (Studio hire fees apply.)

Gardens & Trees

If you love the idea of being surrounded by towering trees, blooming flowers, and soft dappled light, gardens and wooded areas make for the dreamiest backdrop. Perfect for families who love a bit of nature, without having to hike too far.

The National Arboretum – With stunning forests, winding pathways, and a mix of native and exotic trees, this is a breathtaking spot for families, couples, and maternity sessions.

Australian National Botanic Gardens – A lush, green paradise filled with native plants, shaded pathways, and seasonal blooms. Beautiful all year round, but especially peaceful in the cooler months.

Weston Park  – Blossoms fill the trees in spring, while autumn brings golden leaves crunching under your feet. It’s a relaxed, spacious spot, perfect for letting the kids run wild.

Pialligo Redwood Forest – A peaceful, shady location best suited to morning or midday sessions. Towering redwoods create a calm, magical vibe, and the nearby open spaces give little ones room to play. Plus, it’s an easy walk from the carpark—always a win with young families.

Fetherston Gardens – A hidden gem tucked away in Weston Creek, offering winding paths, vibrant greenery, and a peaceful atmosphere. Its mix of open lawns and shaded spots makes it great for playful family sessions or quiet maternity shoots.

Seasonal Magic

Canberra puts on a show in autumn and spring, making them the perfect seasons for your family, maternity, or couples session. Whether you love the golden tones of crunchy leaves or the soft pastels of spring blossoms, these spots are some of my favourites:

Autumn Leaves – Warm & Golden

Weston Park, Yarralumla – Tree-lined paths, golden leaves, and a peaceful lakeside.

The National Arboretum – Sweeping views and glowing forests at sunrise or sunset.

Telopea Park – A stunning autumn spot with leaves falling everywhere in April and May.

Spring Blossoms – Soft & Dreamy

Weston Park, Yarralumla – Full of pink and white blossoms in early spring.

The National Arboretum – Beautiful blooming trees and wide open spaces.

Telopea Park – Pretty tree-lined paths with soft blossoms in September.

Best timing:

Autumn: Late March – early May

Spring: Mid-August – late September
